Two rows of different cards are placed face up on a table. Someone is asked to check that none of the cards are duplicates. When this is done the assistant is asked to gather up one of the rows of cards and place them face down on the table. He is then asked to place his hand on the cards to make sure that nobody can get at them. Tell your assistant to look at the remaining row of cards and to think of any two cards in the pile. The cards are then gathered up and the spectator is asked what the two cards were. When these cards are again laid out on the table, the two selected cards will not be there. They will now appear in the first pile.
